DD with a 2.1 system?

I'm currently sporting a 2.1 system. I just want to know if, say, when I play 360 I should definitely set it to Digital Stereo as opposed to DD. Since DD has discrete channels are its front channels equivalent to that stereo signal? I'm not so sure since the stereo option is even present.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'play 360' unless you mean playing a DD encoded disc on an XBox 360.

If you have a 2.1 system and play a 5.1 disc either the player or the receiver (depending on how things are configured) will downmix the 5.1 channels into 2 channels. The two front channels of a 5.1 mix are not the same as a stereo track or DD 2.0 track but you still hear everything because it is downmixed to2 channel.

If the question about digital stereo or DD applies to an xbox or dvd player then set it to digital stereo (which should mean PCM) if you want the player to do the downmix or DD if you want the receiver to do the downmix.
