How do these 2 subs compare? I am going to be using the sub primarily for music.

Which Dayton? There's three.

Also, Hsu is coming out with the HO sub. Is that supposed to be better than the VTF?

Tough choice. If size doesn't matter, go with the HSU. If it does, I'd go with the Titanic 12" (get the kit and save $150).

You know you really want the Dayton Titanic 15" with the 1000 watt amp. It's only $150 more, and 2" larger than the 12". ;)

Thanks for the help. Well, I'm not great with my hands. So if I do decide to go with the Dayton, I'll go with a prebuilt kit.

I am not concerned about size. But the Hsu has a 350watt amp while the Dayton has a 500watt amp. Does that make a difference?

And is Hus that much larger than the Dayton?

Is either one a sealed design, or are both ported?

The Dayton is a bit cheaper than the Hsu after factoring in the shipping charge. That's why I am tempted by the Dayton.

A "bit cheaper" is not a good yardstick.

The power won't make a difference, because the Hsu is more efficient as a ported design, while the Titanic is a sealed enclosure. Sealed enclosures require more power to reach similar spl's. Some say sealed enclosures are better for music. The Hsu will be better for movies and that low "depth charge" bass.

The Hsu is much, much larger than the Titanic, even the 15". Assembly time on the Titanic kit is probably 10-15 minutes. The box is preassembled.

Sealed subs are generally smaller. I am also curious to see how these daytons subs perform. If the dayton stays true, either sub would be a nice addition.

Dayton

Thought I would jump in here. I'm new but have been reading the forum for bit. I have been using the 10" Dayton for 8 or 9 months now. I bought the kit, cost $350. This took me about 30 mins. to put together with the help of a four year old, it's fail proof. I have been very happy with the sound (music only) and would recomend it to anybody. Granted there are just as good and maybe better for the price but I don't think you would be sorry. It seems to very tight and has good detail.

Thanks for the helpful replies guys!

I'm in the Durham, NC area.

I generally like sealed subs, becuase of all the speakers I've listened to, sealed ones gave me the best sound.

If I purchase the kit, do I have to do any soldering? I'm not good with soldering and stuff. What tools do I need? Just some Philips screwdrivers?

The VTF-3 HO is supposed to be released by the end of this year at about a $100 premium over the standard VTF-3 making it $999. According to HSU, you can retrofit the HO option to an existing VTF-3.

Pics here of the prototype.

A $100 premium over the standard VTF-3 makes it $799, not $999.

DOH, I misread that. VTF-3 HO will be $899 and the "turbocharger" option will be an additional $100 for a price of $999. According to them, the "turbo" can be added to the normal VTF-3 MKII which was what I got confused on.

The Titanic systems come in a kit form that can be easily assembled in approximately 1 hour. The subwoofer driver, amplifier, custom cabinet, and all necessary hardware are included, and can be assembled with just a few basic tools. The cabinet itself is ready-to-go, including driver cutouts, amplifier cutouts, pre-installed T-nuts for driver mounting, and pre-installed T-nuts for the spikes.
