I am looking at possibly building a sub-woofer for my stereo/home TV. there is a 12" (listed above) for sale on CL for 35 dollars.

the person states in the ad
"It sounds good at low to medium - high volumes with heavy bass. I have noticed at high volumes with heavy bass loads it makes a quiet slight sound flapping noise. I reduced the gain and it doesn't do it anymore."

is it worth getting for a first time sub or does it sound like it was abused?

Thanks for reading.

$200 sub for $35? As long it's not damaged, I'd say grab it before it's gone.
If it sounds good at "moderate" volumes, it's fine.

Post up the ad. Could be vent noise if he built such a box I suppose but still makes me wonder why so cheap....

Curious, what would you use it for home or car and what box would you build for it?

Home. He said he was using it in a home theater. I am not sure what box I would make for it.

I have the 12" UM. I built a sealed cabinet matching the dimensions of the one from Parts Express for music and powered it with a Behringer NU3000dsp amp. I don't watch TV so I opted for 2- RSS315HF-4's instead. The UM worked well enough, but I'm not a bass head beyond what the bassist/band intended. The UM 12" is a beast, IMO. Kids can't easily hurt it either so it's great in precarious environments.

I am not looking for a ton of bass, Just like the sound effects to be felt a bit. ;)

Would a Marty micro work with a 12" as I see they are designed around the 15" sub?

FWIW when the UM series was first released they had some QC issues. MIght check the serial number with Dayton to see if it corresponds.

I have heard of it, I am not going to get the Dayton and he is too wishy washy on answering questions.

I'm just suggesting you use the software if you want to put a different driver in the same box, altho mating an existing box to a different driver/amp than it was designed for may not work optimally. If you're willing to DIY this modest cost subwoofer design gets good reports. Also, you might just look around the diy subforum here at AH as well as that one at avsforum...
