Dark Side Of the Moon and SACD question

Hi, I've been a Pink Floyd fan for a while now, but it took me this long to buy the SACD anniversary edition of Dark Side of the Moon. Wow, its great, among the innovative likes of Srg. Pepper. I have a question, how many of you actually have a SACD compatible player? Doesn't only Sony make them? My dvd player can't play SACDs, but I have the mode set on PLII Music. Do you guys think I'm getting a pretty simular effect using the PLII decoders or does having a SACD player make a world of a difference?

There are lots of SACD players. I know that Denon and Pioneer both make universal players (SACD, DVD-A, and everything else you can think of that isn't new technology).

Does your receiver support 5.1 analog connections? If so, do yourself a favor and at the very least pick up an inexpensive DVD-A/SACD combo player. You'll be able to hear DSotM in true 5.1 surround as James Guthrie intended you to hear it. Simulated surround is like kissing your sister.

Hawkeye is right. I have a Denon and it's very good. When I first heard DSOTM in 5.1, I was impressed... Try it, you'll like it!

Impressed is not the word - F^&*ing Fantastic would be more like it.
(typed as I sit here listening to DSOTM in 5.1 SACD)

Okay okay, so how much is one of these players gonna set me back? By the way, I'm listening to all my cds via my dvd player and a PCM digital connection (most of you use your dvd players as cd players right?)

You can get them pretty cheap now, plenty of choices for less than 200.00

My Pioneer 588A plays both SACDs and DVD-As, and cost only $150 CND! Surround music sounds gorgeous on it!

By the way, if you want the hi-res portions of SACDs and DVD-As, you will need to use the six analogs outputs on your player. Otherwise, you'll get the redbook CD layer for SACDs and the DTS, Dolby Digital and CD portions for DVD-As.

cheers,

I went to Yamamha to check and it looks like your 5830 receiver does indeed have 5.1 analog inputs. If you hurry you might be able to pick up a Pioneer 563a combo player on eBay for a song. The MSRP on this unit was US$249.

You can pick up the newer DV-578AS for about $100, brand new from a good online dealer.

Thanks for the help guys, but I don't really think I need a SACD player given that the Dark Side of the Moon is probably the only SACD I have that I know about. At this moment I just can't justify spending the cash.

I have a Denon universal, but I also have a couple of Pioneers. You can get a good Pioneer for around $100, and it makes a world of difference. You're really missing a lot by using faux surround instead of the real MC mix.

There's a lot of other fantastic stuff out there if you have a universal machine. The Flaming Lips DVD-A "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is a marvel, as is the last Steely Dan disc or two. By the end of the month, the Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin" will also be out on DVD-A!

I love the Yoshimi DVD-A. I only use the stereo version though. The 5.1 version is too distracting. I hope they ship Soft Bulletin with a stereo version as well. I'll be disappointed if they only include some overly gimmicked 5.1 version. Can't find anything yet that has details.

I have a Denon universal and a SACD player. DSOTM is definitley one of my favorites. A universal is a good way to go, IMO. Start your collection with an inexpensive player and see if you are finding enough titles (both DVD-A and SACD), then if it's working out for you, move to a nice player for them. SACD is definitely worth it in terms of sound quality, but the number of titles I'm interested in is fairly limited. DVD-A is a good option also, as it sounds about as good and has a somewhat more varied selection of titles; a universal player gives you the benefit of both.

You guys may of known for a while, but I just found out that DSoTM synchs up completely with The Wizard of Oz. How cool is that? Have any of you tried it (im gonna do it soon)?

I've done it and it's pretty creepy.

You can probably pick up a Pioneer DV-578 or 588 on eBay for cheap.

The 563a I mentioned earlier went for $51.99. That's a great price for that unit. IIRC, it was said to be an open-box special. I read that the 563a is said to be a true DSD (SACD) machine when used in stereo or 5.1 mode without the bass management, whereas the 578 converts DSD to 88.2/24 PCM. If true, that's a great reason to favor the 563a over the 578.

I get my hi-res titles from acousticsounds.com, they have a decent selection of SACD's and DVD-A's. I don't know what the prices should be in the US, but I get them landed here in Aus for about the same cost as a redbook cd here. And their service is good and reliable I've found.
