D-VHS / D-Theatre??

Hey guys, I have no idea if this subject might have been covered in detail in previous threads or not, but I am just wondering... What experience does anyone have in the D-VHS format? I had one of the first generation players, but took it back when I was not all that impressed with the increase in video resolution. Now with that said, the player that I had did not have a digital connection to the monitor, and was using component jacks. Has anyone used them now that they are using dvi/hdmi? If so I would love to hear what you think... Thanks...

I think you shouldn't spend another second thinking about D-VHS. This format was dead before it started (ya, the 10 guys that love it might disagree). As with the laserdisc, it is just a matter of time before this format goes away for good. Wait for HD movies on DVD is my suggestion. If you like to collect antiques, buy a D-VHS player.

D-VHS was a good holdover idea. Obviously an HD disk was always going to be the market winner, but back then They knew disk was still going to be several years off. There was a good spate of initial releases for D-Theater , but then studio support dropped off. Since theres no new stuff that I'm aware of, why bother? (unless you really like to record the HD network).

Recording off air is only possible with those machines. No DirecTV HD or cable HD... They completely are worthless. Their firewire connection doesn't accept DV into it, just MPEG2 20Mbit.

I asked a slew of questions when I saw it the first time and was thoroughly under impressed with the engineering that went with it. Great for a show piece, but lousy for much else.

Yes, if you like obsolete products pick one up. Then wait a few months and pick up a HD-DVD player... since you like obsolete products.

If you want the next generation - get a Blu-Ray disc player next year and be happy.

Easy Killer.

I never really said that I liked it, and if you read my initial post you will see that I took the first one back when I was not impressed with it. I was just asking what sort of improvements people had seen since they started using digital connections. Recording HD isnt an issue for me at all; I live in Europe and they do not have HDTV over here yet, though it is on the way. Basically what it comes down to is I was just looking for info. I do not mind buying things just to try them out; we have the chance to take them back within 90 days for a full refund if not satisfied...

I think our point was that nobody has one and neither should you. Unless, like we said, you like obsolete technologies.

If you have a 90 day grace period, maybe you should get one and let us know what you think. However, I doubt you will find many that care.

Digital connections seem to have varied results for most people with some saying they get marginal improvement, others saying they get no improvement, and others saying they see a loss in quality.

It almost seems 50/50 between a quality gain and a quality loss with HD over HDMI/DVI vs. just using component cables.

I personally won't switch until Blu-Ray forces me into HDMI.

Yeah, I read your originally post and didn't mean to sound harsh - I would definitely wait a year for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD though. As I said above... I don't think HD-DVD will win. But, what do I know?!?

D-Theatre movies

I know that eveyone hates them, and that they are incredibly obsolete etc, but I have a D-VHS player at work. I use it for displaying HD movies on an HD panel. I know that we should replace it with an HD DVD or whatever, but that is not an option for us at this point. Does anyone know where I could buy D-Theatre movies? I have looked and looked and can't seem to find anywhere that still carries them.
