So you DIY'ers... even if you haven't yet, you know you've thought of it. If you were to do a DIY sub, how would you build it? I'm tinkering with the idea and while I've done a lot of boxes for car audio, I haven't tried the home route yet. My main concerns now are...

a) downfiring vs sidefiring
b) 10" vs 12" vs 15"
c) sealed or ported
d) what amp?

Mind you all, this is going into a room that's roughly about 24' x 23'. For amplification, the partexpress.com 500w plate amplifier looks intriguing, but if any of you have better ideas let me know. For subs I was thinking using something from Adire, Image Dynamics, Audiomobile MASS (you can see my car audio background =) if i can find one, or whatever else intrigues me. Any info's highly appreciated. Thanks!

I would basically build my Velodyne HGS-18. I'd use an 18" driver in a sealed enclosure and move a lot of air gently. If I wanted to do something more radical, maybe I'd consider a folded horn setup with an 18" sub as well, but then I would feel obligated to build a pair of them.

Look Here

I find the twelve does not go quite deep enough for me, but that's ok, I plan to supplement the bottom end with the larger sub.

Also, go here for some great information, that's where I found just about everything I needed.

I built my own, and I'm VERY happy with the way it turned out. I used an 18" driver in a HUGE box. Not something you could buy at a retailer, and if you could, the price would be ridiculously high. The driver had a $1000 retail new, and I got it used for $175. To build the box cost me about $200, plus connectors, wiring and paint.

I figure to buy anything that performs as well would have cost $1500 or more.

If you want to see photos, I posted one on the systems forum. The thread topic is "canadian system".

Keep us posted on how your sub turns out because my room is just a little bigger than yours and I was thinking of building a custom sub myself, I want something that will make my couch walk across the room with me sitting on it!
