Current Layout - opinions?

Here is how my living room/dining rooms are currently setup.

The brick is a brick flooring for the wood stove.
It looks like it will be a little tight to setup a 6.1 system around the couch, but it should be able to work (I think)

Now an alternative would be to flip flop my two rooms...

The amount of room for a HT system would be smaller, and I'm not sure how excited I would be with having a diining room table with the brick work and wood stove. But in the second picture the layout is better/easier for speaker placement.

Looking for any opinions.

Personally

I would go with the second layout. Being a movie junkie, the second one is better, however, it is your home and you will have to live with it and deal with the WAF (if you have one ;) ) Is the dining room table really that big, 8' or so? Just my $.02 :D

WAF?

Yea, the dining room table is about that large... but with me getting the HT stuff, the Wife wants to sell that table and get a new/different one... which might be smaller.

I agree, the layout is better. but the amount of space is a lot smaller... I wish the living room wasn't such an odd shape!!!

WAF= Wife Acceptance Factor :eek:

It is all about compromise :D

Smaller room = better placement, better acoustics

Larger room = poor placement, poor acoustics

In the end, you decide what is best.

smaller room I should of gone with Bookshelve fronts... right? heh ?? no? heh

ok yea... the WAF I might be able to pull off... she wants a cherry wood entertainment center... doesn't fit kittycornered in layout #1.... but it would fit fine on layout #2.

Hm... intersting :D

Bookshelf speakers?...depends. I have a small room 13 x 14 and I have a pair of Vandersteen 1C towers. So you don't have to go with bookshelf speakers.

A happy wife makes a happy home :D

Always inform the wife that a good HT is a work of the gods.... wives can be replaced.

That always solves my problems.

Maybe that is why I am sleeping in my lazy boy.

Windows and doorways often determine what works best. You want to keep the traffic flow to a minimum in the HT area. It looks like #2 is a better choice. Are those "bumped" out areas where you propose the seating solid walls or windows?

bumped out on the right side wall, that's a sliding door.
Windows are on all the 4' sections at the top and left side of the picture... as well as the 5' section of the left side.

I rather think, with a second look, that your present arrangement is the best. I would work the present living room with the brick area as the HT and leave the sliding doors and traffic to the dining room. But, man, is that table to scale with the room? I would recommend something round, with a couple of sections you can add with a crowd.
If your rear surround speakers have to go above windows, use wall brackets and fire them downward. The side surrounds might go on solid walls either side of the couch.

Na This isn't wonderfuly to scale... I might snap a few pictures this weekend and post them.
I'm torn... In floor 1 - It would work exactly how you're suggesting (going with a 6.1 system) with the 3 rears mounted above windows angled downward...

Yea I'll snap a few pictures tomorrow and post.

I would have to agree that your present setup is going to be your best bet. I would suggest moving your couch out even with the parallel walls and mounting the side surrounds on those walls instead of keeping them in the cove. This will help to give you better imageing. Good luck.

Here are a few pictures of my setup....
I do not have the rears up yet... they will be AS-R1s... 3 of them.
I'm guessing the center surround will go above the window, L+R surround will go left and right of each window (not above).

and you can see my situation with the right Loudspeaker, and my air vent.

The sub will go behind the couch.

Again, looking for any feedback :)

Would switching the couch and the entertainment center work? Put the TV and front speakers in where the couch is now, the sub along the left side wall and the couch on the opposite corner. Then you would have to work in the surrounds with the couch's final resting place.

intersting ideas. I see a couple of problems though.

1) the couch I don't believe will really fit in the space where the entertainment center currently is.
2) the entertainment center would block the windows (and the light from the windows)
3) it's not very feng shui. :D

But thanks for the ideas.
