I have the older version, the DV-578A-S and I love it. I really don't think you can go wrong on one of these players when you're on a budget.

Shawn, I have the 588A-s, and generally, I love it. It plays both hi-res audio formats, and sounds pretty good doing it. It does convert from DSD to PCM, and has an unspecified crossover point for the bass management -- it's mentioned nowhere in the manual, and when I called up Pioneer, the guy I spoke to didn't know it.

As I lack a progressive screen, I can only comment on the core video aspects of the player. First and foremost, the layer change is like lightning. It's so fast on some discs, that my receiver doesn't register even the slightest pause. On most discs, it's so fast it's barely noticeable. That's the good news.

The bad news is the player can't pass blacker than black. It's driving me nuts, frankly, seeing the occassional inky ill-defined blob on the screen. While the 578A has a firmware/hack fix, the 588A doesn't as yet. In case you're interested, somebody on another forum "fixed" the BTB problem by setting the player to interlace and his display to 1080i and found that the "dead" areas in the blacks were gone and the picture looked great.

One minor gripe is the lack of a "random" button on the remote. To enable random playback, i.e., for audio discs, you have to go into the player's menu. And random won't work at all on mp3 CDs, so that sucks.

Playback of DivX files is pretty good. Load times are a little slow, but I can forgive that when I see the video quality of DVDs (blacker than black notwithstanding).

Overall, I'm quite happy with the 588A. I got it for only $150 Canadian (about $123 US), which is dirt cheap. Good solid player, with a few downsides, but otherwise, a player with which I've very happy.

cheers,

supervij, how is the player at playing DVD+R discs? I've heard that Pioneers prefer DVD-R discs but the burner in my PC is only a + burner. Thanks.

Hi Duffinator. I don't have a DVD burner, so I haven't tried out any DVD-R or +R discs at all. The 588A plays the following discs (according to the manual): DVD-A; DVD-V; DVD-R; DVD-RW; Audio CD; Video CD; CD-R; CD-RW; Super Audio CD; and Fujicolour CD. Sorry, Duff -- looks like the 588A won't be any good to you unless you were to find a hack or something for it.

Here's some more on disc compatibility of the 588A, in case anyone's interested:

"The DVD-Audio content on the DVD side of a DualDisc cannot be played with this product. The DVD-Video content on the DVD side of a DualDisc may or may not be played with this product. Since the audio content on the non-DVD side of a DualDisc is not compliant with the Dompact Disc Digital AUdio specs, it may or may not be played with this product." So basically, buy DualDiscs at your own risk.

In terms of CD-R/RW, it will play mp3, WMA, jpeg and DivX video files. But it doesn't offer multi-session playback, nor unfinalized disc playback. File structure: up to 299 folders on a disc, and up to 648 folders and files combined within each folder.

DVD-R/RW: Edit points may not play exactly as edited on Video Recording; the screen may go momentarily blank at edited points. The player does not support unfinalized playback, and won't play WMA/mp3/jpeg files on DVD-R/RW. Which is kinda sucky.

And regarding mp3s and WMAs, it supports any bit-rates except for variable. And it doesn't like WMA lossless encoding. And the player is DRM (digital rights management) compatible, which means that DRM-protected audio files will not play.

Geez, the more I read up on this stuff in the manual, the more I wonder if I should've gotten a different player! But I tell ya: what it does play, it plays beautifully. Ah, what the heck -- I'll keep it.

cheers,
supervij

Thanks for the reply supervij.

Anybody else had any luck with DVD+R discs?

Duff, out of curiousity, I googled the +R for this player, and found videohelp.com, which says that although DVD+R is not listed in the documentation, that it does play the +R format.

One person said, "Playback on this machine with dvd+r is very loud. Hell, it's even louder than my VCR which is a sony that has almost no soundproofing built in."

And another said, "DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL all worked on this player, even though they are not listed as compatible. Also, multisession DVD+RWs filled with MP3s or DivX files worked. This I love, because I can burn a multisession DVD+RW with XviDs of tv shows, adding a new show to the disc as it airs."

So there's yer answer!
