ctr or sub...which is more important

I agree 100%.

As soon as you have a sub and quality mains, throw everything else away (or sell it on Craigslist)... except maybe hold on to the surrounds til I replace them. Depends on how crappy they are.
I was planning on that. I am shopping for new mains and have a sub coming this weekend (a hand-me-down).

Eddie, What kinda sub?

I was planning on that. I am shopping for new mains and have a sub coming this weekend (a hand-me-down).
You're on the rigth track. Get good main speakers and see if the sub works for you. If so, then get the center channel. If you find the given sub not to your liking, buy a new sub and the center channel afterwards. Your main speakers will be more than capable of filling in the gap for a missing center channel.
