Crysis 2 Author Convicted of Assault
Canadian sci-fi author Peter Watts faces up to two years in prison.
By Frank Cifaldi, 03/24/2010

Canadian science fiction author and lead Crysis 2 writer Peter Watts has been found guilty of resisting a United States border patrol officer, and faces up to two years in prison.

The 52-year-old author was found guilty by a Michigan court on Friday. Watts' sentencing is scheduled for April 26.

Watts' controversial arrest was first reported by Boing Boing in December. Exactly what transpired that night is unclear, but according to the San Francisco Examiner, the statute he was charged with covers "an individual who assaults, batters, wounds, resists, obstructs, opposes, or endangers a person who the individual knows or has reason to know is performing his or her duties."

I read this in my local paper. Border entry points are one place where you have severely limited rights and/or protection of your person or property. Border guards have a frightening amount of power and seem to be predisposed to have pettiness, aggression and arrogance that is ill-suited to that power. The slightest hesitation or delay in following what may or may not be a legitimate demand can result in violent, forcible custody, invasive personal searches and destruction of your property with no recourse or appeal.
