I'm either going to buy a TH-42PX75U or TH-50PX75U. If I get the 42", I plan to buy from Crutchfield. They offer an Extended Service Plan for $149/3yrs or $189/5yrs. The plan is an extension of the manufacturer's warranty and is serviced by ServiceNet.

Has anyone here ever purchased the plan from Crutchfield? If so, how was your experience if you had to use it.

Haven't gotten an extended warranty before, but there is a reason. If you're getting a quality item the warranty isn't necissary there is a reason they are being sold because in the long run the company makes money from it ;).

I think extended warranties are a waste of money. It's insurance that has a low probability of paying off - just like I've been paying auto insurance for 25+ years and have never had an accident.

But, if it gives you peace of mind, make sure to check the terms of the warranty. Many times the warranty runs concurrent with the manufacturer warranty and will explicitly state that the manufacturer warranty has precedence. In other words, your 3 year warranty will start at the day you purchase the TV - just like the manufacturer warranty - and will not be valid until all remedies with the manufacturer warranty are exhausted. So your '3 year' warranty is actually two years and will not cover anything that would be covered by the manufacturer warranty. Extended warranties are a cash cow for the provider but for the consumer, not so much.

I wouldn't go for the extended warranty on a Panasonic plasma. They are very reliable sets. I would, however, go for an extended warranty if I were buying any rear projection set (regardless of brand). They have the most problems of any type of TV.

Now, that's not to say that RPTV's are unreliable (though Samsungs have proven to be). The failure rate is still fairly low but I would feel much more comfortable with an extended warrranty on a RPTV.
