crt hd monitor questions

Hey guys, I have a question regarding the use of my Sony TV. It's a 34hs420. I know there is a warning against watching a certain tv station for too long because the stations logo can burn in the screen but what is a acceptable amount of time I can leave the channel on? Also, some HD channels are not broadcasted in 16:9 and thus have the black or grey bars on the top & bottom or on the sides of the screen. Is it safe to watch these channels while these bars are present?

Thanks for all the input, I just don't want to ruin my new tv.

I have a Toshiba CRT based RPTV but the same principles apply. With a 4x3 HD feed through my DTV HD TiVo I cannot stretch the picture to cover the entire screen and I have side bars visible. On non HD channels the box will stretch the picture to fill up the entire screen and eliminate the side bars. I'd use the stretch (Widescreen mode on my Toshiba) option whenever possible on non HD signals and not worry about it too much for an HD feed. My set is almost 5 years old and I have not noticed any lines where the bars are. I have noticed the channel ID from the news station I watch burned in at the lower right corner of my screen. It's rarely noticeable but I have seen it a few times. Bottom line is unless you play a game or watch ESPN where a box is static 24/7 don't worry about it. It's not nearly as much of a problem with CRT's as with Plasma's and the newest Plasma's have pretty much eliminated burn in problems.

Thanks. I figured for the HD signals it must be ok since it's impossible to stretch the screen. Appreciate your post....
