Crossover to sub....

I have just bought an Onkyo 989. I can't for the life of me work out how to set the crossover frequency. The sub has a dial, but recommends the amp should be set up to do this if possible.

How is the amp working out which frequencies to send to the sats and which to the woofer??

Any help greatly appreciated.....

It probably doesn't have a selectable x-over, as it somewhat older. That means that when you set any/all speakers to small, the fixed crossover in the receiver is used automatically - it is not adjustable.

According to the manual, it is fixed at 80Hz.

Thanks folks....

I'd better read the manual again, I didn't see the bit about 80Hz!

Will fiddling with the dial on the sub be of any use?

Only if you want the crossover set to lower than 80Hz.. but then you'd be missing out on part of the frequency response. I'd just put it at its highest setting and let it go.

good day, with my Onkyo 575x, the small speaker setting crosses over at 120hz. The large speaker setting crosses at 80hz. Turn your sub cross-over to its highest range, (not the volume), it only gets what the receiver sends it.

The large speaker setting should not have a crossover point at all, it should send a full range signal - that is the definition of the large setting.

From page 30 of the 989 manual:

When setting the speaker size in the Speaker Config sub-menu,
use the guidelines given below.
Large: The complete frequency range for the channel you are
setting will be output from the speaker.
Small: Frequencies of the channel you are setting lower than 80
Hz will be output from the subwoofer. If the front speakers are set
to “Large,” then the sound may be output from both the left and
right speakers. (All THX speakers are small.)

In my instruction manual it says select lg. or sm., when I called Onkyo they gave me this Info. He said a full freq. range would not be sent when "sub- yes" is selected. Did I get a new employee?

Older receivers like the 5xxx series Onkyos have fixed xover frequencies but they still follow the rules for Large vs Small. If you set the speakers to Large, they get a full range signal and it won't matter if sub=yes or no. The quoted section of the manual states clearly that any speakers set to Small will have frequencies below 80 Hz sent to the sub. That implies that the fixed xover frequency is 80 Hz.

If you were to set some of the speakers as Large and others to Small but set Subwoofer = No, then the bass below 80 Hz would be sent to the Large front speakers.

Yep, you got someone who either didn't explain it well enough, or didn't know what they were talking about.

That's sad that you can't always trust who you talk to....shouldn't they be required to have at least a day or twos training prior to answering tech questions related to their products?
