Hello everyone. Im trying to find which crossover setting is the best for my def tech speakers. I find having the floor speakers on Full Band seems to better than 80hz (THX). Its seems more clear and louder. But I'm also trying to figure out which setting is best for the center channel. Full Band or 80hz (THX). Thoughts?

Thank you!

Have you tried other crossovers than 80? You don't seem to have a subwoofer from your signature, tho.....what do you have?

Built in powered subs in towers and center. Are the tower LFE inputs connected to the Onkyo sub pre outs? Is Subwoofer set to YES in speaker configuration?Run YPAO with the mic and see where it sets the crossovers. You can tinker if you don’t like it. Turn off double bass. LPF is good at 120

When would someone need to turn the double bass on?

It sends bass from mains to subs as well when mains are set to full. Otherwise, no bass is output from subs if mains are set to full and double bass is off. This is how Onkyo does it, but other makes have different settings for it.

I do plan on getting a subwoofer later down the road. Probably will go with an SVS. But when I do, would I which the double bass on then?

Double bass is a preference thing, some like the doubling up of those frequencies, some don't (I prefer not to use it myself). Same pretty much for a crossover setting., it can boil down to preference. I didn't realize you had those powered woofers (hard to call even DefTec's dedicated subs "subs", tho let alone their powered woofers). Experiment with both....

Also, rears are for when you have a 7.1 setup, for 5.1 the next two speakers used would just be surrounds (and are generally placed more to the sides of the listening position).

No. I wouldn’t set those speakers to Full even now and would not use Double Bass. I’d connect an LFE cable to your current subs if you haven’t already and try running ACCUEQ. I think I mentioned YPAO earlier. I need to stop switching AVRs.:D

Getting a sub is what is most important. Probably go with SVS or HSU or Rythmik.

As far as for now I’m thinking try full range on the towers and try 80 or 90hz on the rest.

Ok, so seems Def Tech is doing a few Bose moves here. While the built in subs are powered, a full signal is required as the speaker has it’s own crossovers but is not saying what it is, much like Bose modules and their cubes. There is a separate LFE input. Again, like certain Bose modules. So, you will want to set all three of the speakers to FULL BAND as the center channel is made this way as well.

The Onkyo has two SUB pre outs but you need three. I’d get a Y adapter for one of the pre outs and use it for the FRONTS. I’d use the other pre out for the CENTER CHANNEL LFE. Again, set it to FULL BAND. It may not make sense for a small center channel but they built in a powered subwoofer and crossover.

While I normally wouldn’t recommend DOUBLE BASS, you are in a spot and have to turn it on. The Onkyo doesn’t know that the speakers have built in subs and crossovers and will cut the signal to LFE(SUB PRE OUT) when FRONT speakers are set to LARGE. But, you need them set to LARGE so the speaker can apply it’s own crossover. DOUBLE BASS now has to be ON to get LFE signal from SUB pre outs to LFE input on speakers.

It may seem confusing and not all receivers handle using FULL BAND and LFE signals together the same way and with those kinds of speakers. I only discovered how the 696 handles it all after many hours of playing with it.

Scratch center recommendation. The line in is for a center pre out connection , not an LFE pre out. Keep it set to LARGE and the two LFE pre outs from the Onkyo connected to the FRONT LFE inputs.

I now have the towers and center on full band with LFE to 120hz

Sorry to rattle on with settings. Your setup requires a few different settings based on the design of the speakers. Hope you get it where you like it.

So, with your current settings, try some different things to see how you like it. A good test for the center is Pavarotti singing in Dolby Atmos. Using the Apple TV, go to Apple Music and check out Classical in Spatial Audio. The vocal is presented in the center channel and will put it to the test. I personally think they nailed this song at the 3 Tenors show at Dodgers Stadium in 94 but this version is great. The track after it from Bohemian Tales is stunningly vibrant even on my budget setup.
