cross-over setting on RX-V2400

Hello to all,

I recently bought an Axiom M60ti,QS8 and a VP 150 speakers to replace my other HT speakers.I am using the Yamaha as Processor.
I wanted to ask about the cross-over setting on RX-V2400,based on manual (pg.50)you can choose from 40 to 200Hz w/c 80 is the THX standard.My question is,does this setting applies for all speakers set to small or to the front (Main)only.If to the front speakers, then what are the default cross-over setting for Center and surround if set to small.

First off congrats, on selecting a great set of speakers. How do they sound? Which sub are you using?

You may know all of this but just in case here you go;

The crossover setting is basically how the receiver separates where the frequency is divided between your speakers and you sub. Now the great thing is that your front mains go pretty low in the frequency response area. What you do not want to do is judge where you set your crossover by them alone, as your receiver will then use that as the baseline for all of the speakers. Your surrounds give the response between 65-95 Hz; given the room specifics what you hear would be between these two frequencies. So they are the weakest low end speaker in your set up lets say. Not that they are weak they are GREAT speakers, but their lowest frequency response is the highest HZ number in your system.

When you set your speakers to small you are basically telling your receiver that you want the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) to go to a subwoofer not the mains, center, or surrounds. You then (by setting your crossover) tell it where to divide the signal sent to your speakers and your sub. So it is the most common set-up in HT to set all of your speakers to small, and then set your crossover.

With all of that said I would recommend you use small on all of your speaker sizes in your receiver, then play around with the crossover setting to see what sounds best for your particular tastes.

Oh yeah, sometimes this goes unsaid because we are so busy with our latest set-up and dialing it in, ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take a little time to just sit and soak it in my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First thanks for the reply.Well i am really happy with the sound of the speaker.At the moment i still have my JBL E250P (have to earn more bucks for a better sub...say EP500)set at LFE whereas all speakers are set to small.Even on my SACD player set-up all speakers are all set to small and sub-on.I know that the cross-over setting is betweem the sub and the speakers (front) but what about the center and the surrounds.My friend has a Rotel RSP-1098 where you can set the cross-over on each speaker set e.g. Front,Center and Surrounds .He has a Epic 80-500 set up.He told me that he read somewhere that if speakers are set to small for center and surround the factory set cross-over is 90Hz(this is for Yamaha).Is it true?
Well i'm already happy with my set-up specially now using RX-V2400 as a pre-amp.Couldn't figure out which CD i have to listen to...Just wanted to optimized my settings,sometimes you got this feeling that you can still do something more.

I just had my TV set ISF calibrated. At the same time, the guy set my audio system as well. My settings are
Front = OFF (I was surprised too)
Center = 100
Rear = 120
He let my ears decide. He queued up some DVDs and we listened. then he would make changes. I am very happy with the results.

I have an Outlaw ICMB for my SACD, but I haven't adjusted the settings yet. I didn't have him make those setting changes.

What does OFF mean for the front speakers? Is that supposed to be the Large setting; ie no xover is applied to them? Also, using different xover points for different speakers is an iffy proposition unless they differ drastically in their frequency response.

Using CDs/DVDs to 'calibrate' in this manner is not such a good idea. If you do that you basically tune for those particular discs and others that are very similar. The best way to calibrate is to use broadband pink noise - either from the internal test tones or from a calibration disc like AVIA or DVE.

If you like the results, great, but IMO the ISF guy should do only what he is trained for - calibrate the video.

Since you currently have the wimpy JBL E250 sub, you might consider setting your mains to LARGE and sub to BOTH to supplement the low end. It would be interesting to see if your M60's play lower than your current sub.

Also, most receivers, including your Yamaha have a single crossover frequency that applies to all speakers. HK receivers and high end models from a few other manufacturers have seperate crossovers for the fronts, center, and surrounds. I am not aware of any "factory defaults" that override the crossover setting, except for THX modes which default to 80 Hz.

You are correct - OFF = LARGE or vice versa. My speaker all have a different range, each having a different cut off point therefore I would think it would be ok to use different cut off frequencies. Please correct if I am worng.

Calibration was done using the AVIA and DVE discs. Once it was calibrated, we tweaked the x-over settings on the fronts only.

Chad B. was familiar with calibrating an aduio system and he has the tools. He spent 2 hours on my audio system before he asked me which I thought sounded better -
As far as he sticking to what he is trained to do, I think if he can do the job, then by all means let him do the job. I doubt everybody on this board is a sound engineer

Well E250 may be wimpy but it can still go dowm to 25Hz without any distortion and with proper setting and placement can give listening pleasure.I only use my sub on HT mode and use "Direct Stereo" mode for Stereo listening,beside Axiom M60 lower frequency is 35Hz?Setting it to large or "Both" might compromise my headroom plus an extra load on the power amp.
Anyway i wasn't much concern between the cross-over setting between main and sub,i just wanted the information if anyone has an idea about the cross-over setting on center and surround if set to small.I'm pretty sure that there should be a setting on the Yamaha (pre-set) although not indicated on the manual or cannot be set through the menu.
At the moment i'm happy with my set-up and not sorry replacing my older set of speakers.
