Can someone explain the fundamentals of Variable crossver points? I am told that the THX standard is 80Hz, why then do manufacturers of recievers give you the option of setting bass between 40- 130Hz. I can understand the settings above 80Hz but why below??

Say I have a floorstanding speaker with 2 5 1/4 drivers that can produce bass down to 55Hz wouldn't I want the cross over to be set at 60Hz to get the most from my speakers and avoid low bass boom??

In tests that I have done my speakers always sound better with the cross set at 80Hz. It gives the music and movies much more bass grunt and authority. With this in mind I ask, why or when would you need to set your crossover below 80Hz?
