Hackers change public safety message

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin drivers making their morning commute were in for a surprise when two road signs on a busy stretch of road were taken over by hackers. The signs near the intersection of Lamar and Martin Luther King boulevards usually warn drivers about upcoming construction, but Monday morning they warned of "zombies ahead."

"I thought it was pretty funny," said University of Texas sophomore Jane Shin, who saw the signs while driving down Lamar Bouelvard with friends Sunday night. "We wondered who did it."

The City of Austin does not own the signs, but they are responsible for the message. The contractor on the construction project owns the signs. A city spokesperson said the hacked messages were only up for a few hours, until the construction project manager saw them during his morning commute and immediately ordered them to be changed back.

"Even though this may seem amusing to a lot of people, this is really serious, and it is a crime," said Austin Public Works spokesperson Sara Hartley. "And you can be indicted for it, and we want to make sure our traffic on the roadways stays safe."

Hartley said though it was a locked sign, the padlock for it was cut. Signs such as these have a computer inside that is password-protected.

"And so they had to break in and hack into the computer to do it, so they were pretty determined," said Hartley.

This crime is a class C misdemeanor in Texas, and Hartley said it endangers the public.

"The big problem is public safety," said Hartley. "Those signs are out there to help our traffic on the roadway to stay safe and to know what's coming up."

KXAN Austin News cameras caught many drivers slowing down to read the signs as they approached. Some read, "Zombies ahead! Run for your lives!"

Hartley said the city will discuss more secure safety measures with the manufacturer of the signs.

The only major problem with doing that is all the people who called in to work saying "Sorry boss I can't make it in, damn zombies on the freeway again."

I saw that the other day. Last night I passed one on the road and wanted to stop sooo bad. I mean it only said "sorry for the construction". If it said "ice on road" or something important I wouldnt mess with it. I even found a site that found the password reset for the little computer they use. hmmm?

I once saw a chain restaurant in Iowa, called Country Kitchen.

Someone climbed up the tall sign and blacked out the o, r, y, and K.

The following is a real question, not a rhetorical one. If it is causing drivers to slow down, as the article states, how is it unsafe, if all it said before was "construction ahead"? Isn't that the desired effect? From what I have seen with many drivers, saying "construction ahead" doesn't always have the desired effect. My guess is, people will be more inclined to pay attention to what is going on ahead with the Zombies warning, though if it happened everyday, it would lose its impact.

Hee, hee. Still laughing. It did take me a few seconds to work the letters (heck, I only counted four "F"s in that IQ test from the other thread, so I'm pretty slow)...but that's hilarious!

This was in Texas, right? You've got people like P-Dawg driving down the road, seeing that sign, grabbing the 12-gauge off the gun rack, and looking for something to blast. I pity the poor drunk soul just trying to stumble home. :)

Seriously, though, who knows how people would take that. There are people who take that stuff at face value - they don't think about it being a joke. "Holy F! Zombies?!" Sad, but true.

And somewhere there are Haitians saying "What a bunch of rubes." :)

I'd use the opportunity to make an editorial comment about the damn construction. It's a sore point for me. I work on a university campus and I'm surrounded by construction that is going to get even worse.

this reminds me of a case down in Tampa Fl area when some teenagers removed a stop sign, someone died at the intersection. They were sentenced to hefty prison sentences. Public safety if no joking matter. it could be one of our family members who suffers due to the immaturity of these guys.

Peace,

I'd file that prank under "harmless". It's a far cry from removing a Stop Sign.
Maybe....Maybe not. I think it all depends on what the sign was set to before it was tampered with. If it was letting everyone know there was ice on a bridge or something of that magnitude, it could be quite serious.
