Creek obh11 troubles

My OBH11 is distorting and breaking up, mostly notably bass, trying to drive
my AKG 501's from a 1988 Adcom GCD 575 (1988), at around 1 or 2 o'clock
position.Is it CD output voltage too high, defective or tired wall wart,
insufficient current or maybe bad part in amp? Musichall.com guy not very
helpful. Any cost effective suggestions? Amp cost 120$ used.

Are you sure that the problem is the amplifier and not the headphones?
