Creative Use for old receivers

I've just upgraded to a HDMI switching receiver (Marantz SR 7002) in preparation for the arrival of my first HD-capable TV. This now leaves me with, in addition to my first piece of stereo equipment (NAD 302 integrated amp), a Marantz SR 8400 collecting dust. I'm trying to think of uses for these items before I put them up for sale. Both pieces have inputs that would allow me to use them as amplifiers. However, I'm thinking that neither is powerful enough to make a difference in my home theater. Would they have enough oomph to drive a passive sub? Anyone got any creative uses for old stuff? Any thoughts?

Ahhh, the age old dilemma - what to do with old stuff? :)

You've mentioned some ideas already.

1. Amp a passive sub - can be done. I did it, but just for kicks as seen in the thread here.

2. Run a system in another room. Perhaps an upgrade to the system connected to a computer.

3. Give it to a friend who doesn't have something that nice. As has been pointed out here in the past, giving away your old gear can be a lot more rewarding than selling it. People really appreciate that stuff.

I would sell them and take the money and put it towards your new HT setup. Or use them in a second system ie: bedroom, office, study. Both of your old pieces have a great name and reputation behind them so you shouldn't have any issue selling them. Good luck to you....

Donate items to a wounded soldier, a needy family on Craigslist or a young friend or family member, your not going to get more than scratch by selling the items and somebody could really use and appreciate the gesture, thats what I do with mass market items, I sell the Hi-End stuff as outboard DACS and seperate Pre-Amps are a bit overkill for folks just starting out and require an investment most of the time to get all items needed to finish the system.
