Creative recently sent me their Aurvana X-Fi noise-canceling headphones to evaluate, and after a few flights and some time to listen to them, I can tell you that they worthy contenders if you are considering taking the plunge. The Aurvana X-Fi is a great product that accomplishes it's intended purpose. The noise-canceling technology works well, and the X-Fi processing improves most recordings. The Creative Aurvana X-Fi headphones are a huge sonic improvement over earbuds, even without the noise-canceling or X-Fi effects. But, you pay a price. These are heavy, full-sized headphones.

20db of noise reduction with an active noise cancellation system? for 300 bucks they had better come up with something better than that. Sennheiser HD280's have "up to" 32db of noise reduction and are entirely passive. And only cost a third of the price. I havent had the chance to use the creative ones but I do own the sennheisers and can attest that they are quite comfortable for use of hours on end and sound quite good as well.

I would assume that the Sennheiser's provides isolation rather than cancelation, thus there is a bit of difference in the intended use. I have no doubt that Sennheiser's are great phones - but they probably don't help with the droning of a jet engine or subway train.

how would cancellation be any different than isolation, besides the fact one is passive and one is not. Maybe I am missing something but the main factor to look at is the decibel level in reduction, not the method in which it was done am i wrong?

The Creatives are probably based on the Bose QuietComfort 2 (which I like a lot). Over here in Norway the Bose phones are about $50 more expensive.
