Crazy tubes question - for a joke

A friend and I are exploring this audio hobby together now and we are both looking for equipment to try to fill our basements and our ears.

Lately we have been talking about amps, tubes and some of the wild frankenstein like tube gear out there. Tubes have got stars in his eyes right now and I think he is thinking about trumping me with a purchase of some high end tube piece. No tubes for me, since I want to move forward in technology, not backward, at least when it comes to my audio or computer gear.

Anyway, I want to flip him out with something as long as it does not cost too much. Even if its a little pricey (< $100 or so), as long as I can toss it back on Ebay or something. Who knows maybe I will keep it if it looks appealing enough.

Here is it. Is there anything out there that I can make ominously wicked looking that has glowing tubes. I want to invite him over, so that when he looks on top of my rack, this tube beast is glaring back at him. And if it looks good enough, I might even leave it. I actually got this idea sort of after seeing a Kieth Emerson show. He had his regular assortment of keyboards, and then this stack of ancient electronica from the early 70s for a gag.

Sorry for the dumbest question every asked on audioholics. Any ideas though?

Now that I think of it, all of that stuff that Keith Emerson had might have not been a gag. He was very much into moog. Anyway, you get the point of the post.

Are you into Headphones? Purchase a headphone amp and a nice set of cans. You will keep the amp and he will be left with his jaw open. :D

You can even find a AV123 SP3 Tube Amp for under $500 pre/owned.

Actually looking around at some this brings me to a question. How come headphone amps have so many tubes? It seems disproportionate to that is needed for powering mains or other speakers.

Good Question. I think you should e-mail Ray Samuels, and ask him. He will answer your question.

Look at some of his amps.

That's about the minimum. The headphone amps pictured have a rectifier (AC to DC in the power supply) and a triode (amplifier) for each channel. 4 tubes total. It could have been made simpler by using a single rectifier for a total of 3 tubes.
