I had been looking for some cheap garage speakers. My blackberry phone running pandora wasn't cutting it. :(

Saw some JBL's up on CL and shot an email. Met the guy at Target parking lot in town and I handed $90 and he gave me these babies! They are JBL 940's. I didn't know much about them when i saw them, but with some help from Chad and some google work, I found the info I needed. They have a 94db sensitivity with 10" woofer, 8" midwoofer, 5" midrange, and 1" titanium tweeter.

One has a squished midrange cone. The other two look perfect. The foam surrounds on them are perfect. Look like new. Honestly, if you had the raw drivers I'd swear they were new in box condition.
Dude said his uncle gave them to him along with a bunch of other stuff. He was just trying to make some $ for his beach vacation so was selling most of the stuff he doesn't use. They weigh 65# each.

I fired 'em up and they all play very well.

Set the receiver x-over to 40hz and put it on a few songs. Watched the speakers for xmax issues and had none up to the point where it was just too dang loud.
No noticeable distortion to speak of either.

Houston, we have a garage setup!

Seriously, I have no life.
That's not a squished midrange cone, it's a pushed in woofer dustcap. If you're careful, you can use Scotch Tape, pressed gently into the center of the indented area, to pull the cap out. If that doesn't work, you can either leave it or use a stick pin, bent to a right angle to puncture the dust cap, gently pull it out and put a dab of wood glue over the hole.

Careful application of a vacuum often works as well.

Good news: dustcaps are cheap, usually easy to undent, and not too difficult to replace.

thanks for the advice, guys.

I may try the vacuum. To be honest, I'm not worried about that set. I was only expecting to buy 2... so the third was just a freebie. ;)

My wife saw them and said "what - are - those". ruh roh.... :D

Good advice. I have found that Duct tape heated up with a heat gun or lighter works the best. Makes the take tacky and doesn't leave any adhesive on the speaker.

Great find!!

These are garage speakers. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

You're liable to break something in the quest to fix an non-issue. Of course you may be like me and unable to stand the sight of a pushed in dustcap.

Yes my OC'd-OCD would have kicked in as soon as I sighted the speaker. Actually you may find that they are fixed tomorrow morning as I take the red eye and sneak into your garage in the middle of the night to fix them.....:)

Exactly why I have a blah-zey (sp?) attitude about them. I’m not listening for sound quality… they’re garage speakers. I just want ‘em to get loud. ;)

I’ll PM you my address just in case. Lol!

Use Tiolet Paper roll place over pushed in mid range to create seal, place mouth over other open end and suck, looks pervy but works like a charm everytime

Yeah, do it in front of your friends while they're over watching the game ...
just get down on your knees and start sucking like a Hoover. :D

Fantastic score. Now you can tell people that JBL stands for Junk But Loud. :)

Nice find, especially getting 3 of them! (one can be for parts or a 3.0 system?) Almost as good as my free Cerwin Vegas that are in my Craigsist special system :D Went to buy an amp and he threw in the speakers too.
