Coytech side clamping wall mount

Has anyone had any experience with Coytech side clamping mounts? I've seen numerous recommendations for the B-tech BT77 side clamping mounts, but they are around 60 bucks. The Coytechs look very similar, and they are around 40 bucks. I'll be mounting two cbm-170's.

Coytech's:

They both ought to work. Your CBM-170 speakers are 14 lbs each, the Coytech brackets are said to support up to 44 lbs, and the B-Tech brackets can hold up to 55 lbs. You can probably get by with much smaller and less expensive brackets.

Ascend does supply two ¼”×20 threaded inserts for simple mounting to wall mount brackets.
http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cbm170/cbm170specs.html If you use them, that opens up the possibility of using a number of less expensive wall brackets.

The threaded inserts look like this, and are simple to use:

  1. First measure the length of the insert.
  2. Use a drill bit with a diameter equal to the outside diameter of the insert's tube, not counting those extended threads.
  3. Use masking tape to mark a drill bit with that length.
  4. If doing this the first time on your speakers makes you nervous, practice on a piece of scrap wood. That way you can figure out, by trial & error, the best drill bit size to use. These inserts are reuseable.
  5. Drill a hole into the back of the speaker cabinet, stopping when you reach the tape.
  6. Start driving the insert in by hand, using an Allen wrench in the top. If the hole you drilled is the right size, those threads will cut in easily as you hand-drive it.
  7. Drive it far enough so the surface is flush to the cabinet's surface.

Thanks a lot Swerd! Yes, I realized that the coytech's were built to support much heavier speakers, but when looking around there seemed to be a big jump in weight categories. There was a bunch of brackets up to the 10 lbs range, but above that everything seemed to skip up to 30 or 40 lbs.

Thanks for the info on the insert. I had noticed that the speakers came with an insert, but I wasn't sure what it was or how to use it. You explained that well, but I must admit that I'd be somewhat reluctant to drill a hole in my new speakers.

Can you give me one or two examples of what kind of bracket I'd use with these inserts? Thanks again.

You were right about about the size range of brackets. But a quick Amazon search came up with these that might work:

http://www.amazon.com/Cotytech-Wall-or-Ceiling-Bracket/dp/B00FZ133TE/ref=sr_1_54?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1421249907&sr=1-54

A few other points:

When you drill a hole in the back of speakers, put masking tape over the spot where you plan to drill to minimize damage to the finish, and tap a starter hole with an awl or nail to keep the drill bit from wandering as you start drilling the hole.

If you drill the hole to the right depth, it won't create a hole through the cabinet wall. But don't worry if you do. You'll fill that hole with a threaded screw :D.

It's always best if you attach a bracket by driving screws into the stud behind the drywall. Use one of those inexpensive stud finders. http://www.amazon.com/Zircon-61897-58051-StudSensor-SL/dp/B000055X8H/ref=sr_1_9?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1421252067&sr=1-9&keywords=stud finder

If you can't find a stud where you need it, use drywall molybolts that expand behind the drywall as you drive in the screw.

Awesome Swerd. Thank you very, very much for the tips and recommendations. Really appreciate it. My speakers should arrive on Friday. Once I get them I'll come back to this post and see what looks like it will work the best. Thanks again!
