We watched this last night. I had $15 in Best Buy RZ Certificates and I got it price matched to Frys, so I more or less paid $5 for it. The movie included 4 sets of 3D glasses, and both the standard and 3D versions of the film on the discs. The color is a bit odd on the 3D version when comparing a few scenes from one to the other, but that is likely due to the green/pink coloration they used for the 3D effect. There were not too many true "in your face scenes", but enough to make it fun, and the overall effect was quite good throughout.

The stop motion was very well done. As good as I have ever seen, even compared to their former work on Tim Burton's 3 stop motion films, and there was one sequence that they said is probably the longest stop motion sequence ever filmed. It lasts only about 2 minutes and took 60 days to film. It doesn't have the look of Burton though, as I am sure was entirely intentional, though a few supporting characters do have some similarities.

The story is fairly good, though not quite a classic. It felt as though it were more of a twist on an existing theme, meaning it has a familiar feel to it, though not from one story in particular. It is darker in tone than I expected, and actually might be a little intense for young children, but we all completely enjoyed it.

The voice acting of Dakota Fanning I found a bit off as well; sometimes very good and sometimes sounding a bit forced. The dts-HD track was very good, though there are far more subtle scenes where things are moving around the room than there are big dynamic scenes. Everything is crystal clear and well mixed. The music is well done also, making a noticeable departure and effort to separate itself from Danny Elfman's tracks on the Burton films. This one did a great job of having the right music for the movie; it fits perfectly. There are some choir tracks that are almost foreboding, despite being a children's choir.

Not much to say about the video. It is top notch.

Fans of stop motion animation and darker themed material will want to pick this one up. Everyone else can probably just give it a rent. Recommended.

Great review... I have the regular blu ray on the way from blockbuster, I should be watching it very soon, and am looking forward to it.

I also watched Coraline last night. I liked the 3D effects but they required a still head or the colors changed. After checking out the 3D (novelty) we ended up watching the 2D version.

Thoroughly enjoyed the film and IMO, picture and sound track were reference quality.

Great review. Would you say it's worth getting on Blu-Ray or should I just pick it up on DVD?

Excellent review. I have recently watched this movie on DVD. The movie is good but not excellent not worth spending few extra bucks Robof83 you should go for DVD rather than Blue-Ray.

Thanks. Is there two separate versions, or do you get to choose whether or not you want 3D in the DVD menu?

Both versions are on there and it asks when it starts up which you want to view. In the main menu you can switch between them as well.

Agreed, I watched the 3D version for a few minutes then had to shut it off, it was really screwing with the colors and giving my GF a headache. I was actually surprised at how much this movie was NOT for kids. With the half nekkid big boobed girl the rats getting eating and so on. I would not show this to any kids under 10. Overall a nifty movie butI kept dozing cause I was tired but when I was awake (80% of the movie) it was an good story.

Just got done watching it and I thought it was very good. The GF also liked it too, and she's not really a big fan of animated movies. Overall it was a lot better than I expected it to be.

I picked this up from Amazon on BF and watched it last night. I really was interested in the 3D version so I tried that first. I really enjoyed the effect overall but found it made the overall colors of the movie seem very flat and drab, much more so than the 2D version would.

I had to quit watching the 3D and go to 2D after about 30 minutes. I found that many things in the picture would tend to get a fuzzy look and have a shimmery glow which I found too distracting. The worst one was in Coralines hair, it would constantly seem to glow, as would parts of her clothing. It just became too much of a distraction for me to be worth the cool 3D effect.

I restarted it in 2D and enjoyed the movie without issue. Even in 2D mode I found it to have a nice depth of field to the picture. I'm glad I picked this one up, I found it quite entertaining.
