Hello,

I have a Toshiba DVD/VHS combo player and would like to know if it's possible to copy the DVD's, (which I've purchased) to VHS. When I try to do this now a icon comes up saying there is copy protection and it won't be allowed. The reason for wanting the movies on VHS is that I have a cottage in a remote area and there is no real channel reception to speak of. I don't really want to get a dish but do like watching something at night on a VHS machine. Any advice would be greatly appeciated.

Thanks in advance,

Unless there is a way to turn off the Macrovision copy protection, you can't do it. That is exactly why the copy protection is on the machine.
If you can use a vcr in the remote area, you should be able to use a $40 dvd player too..........

I think that the Sima SCC boxes are supposed to be able to accomplish what you are after. Check them out to make sure.

How about just getting a cheap DVD player for the cottage?

ALL of the DVD/VHS combo units have a little warning on them that say internal copying is not possible for copyrighted material.

What if he wants two copy's of each movie? This way he doesn't have to keep bringing them back

I understand this. But maybe he just wants an easy old fashioned way to do it. :)

DVD Recorders

Is there any ways of getting around the copy right protection that the DVD's have.

There are a number of ways as listed above.

1. Some DVD players have a way to turn copy protection and region encoding off, this will allow you to copy from a DVD player to any VCR. There are numerous sites across the web that have info on this.

2. I believe the Sima SCC boxes, as listed above, remove macrovision copyright protection and will allow for VHS backups of your DVDs.

3. DVD Shrink (available online) will allow you to make DVD backups on your PC by using a DVD recorder.

I use #3 above all the time. It works well and integrates with Nero so I can backup my DVDs with a few clicks, walk away for a while, and come back and it is done.
