Cooling products

I need a fan for my equipment rack because my recevier and Dish box are generating a decent amount of heat. I'm seeing most cooling products at $70 and above, but that seems outrageous since you can get a computer fan for easily under $20. I would do that except I need it to plug into an electric outlet, not a computer. Any suggestions?

you can take any AC to 12v DC adapter (old wireless phone, or buy a new adapter) and splice the other end to the power cable of the 12v pc fan. plug it into the switched outlet and you're done!

I agree with Mike. He's given a great idea. Just get any sort of DC power supply and you can run those PC muffin fans. If you have a variable power supply, you can change the speed of the fans (higher voltage equals higher speed).

I even use the muffin fans with led's so I can see if it's running

pc fan : less than 2 bucks
12v adapter : less than 6 bucks OR free
electrical tape : priceless

The other option is doing what I did and buy an AC fan so you don't need an adapter .

I purchased a couple from this store. I would recommend getting on like this as it is rated at less than 20dB which will likely be inaudible from your seating position.

If you pick these up all you need are some crimping tools and a wall plug and you are good .

im looking over these fans from here,

i too need to cool my AV rack, the Bello Rack i use,

has a flip down top compartment i have been using to hold the receiver, DVD player, TIVO units, it really keeps everything neat and tidy, but the ventilation is poor, so i am going to remove more holes in the backing and add some fans.

I searched the forums and found this thread which is sort of what i was looking for - my only question is how do you wire that fan?

*with the cord i see it has 2 stripped leads - i am guessing you solder or splice to the terminals shown here:

but the other end looks like it is female instead of male.. would you just wire your own plug? or is that for connecting multiple fans together?

that fan looks like it is wired direct to AC ... I have a 220v version that is super noisy. but when I plug it into a 110v outlet, it's less noisy. but im sure you guys don't have 55v outlets lying around

I'm considering using two of the following fans to vent the closet (40"x40"x8')where I have relocated my AV equipment, to the attic:

At 42cfm & 22dB each, how does the math work for figuring the total sound level in dB (ie. 22dB x 2 = x)? I'm just trying to figure out if this would be audible outside the closet door.
