Cooling fan turn on with receiver question

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays.

My question is this.....how can I turn on cooling fans when the receiver comes on. I have the Pioneer 1019ah and runs pretty warm.....and does not have any 120v power outlets on the back. I want to buy 2 - 120mm cooling fans cool down the receiver whenever it turns on.

-I have a PS3 (dont know the max amps for the usb ports plus it is not always on with the receiver.)

- I have my DVR box (it is not always on with the receiver)

- I dont want to buy an automatic thermostat cuz it would come on and off non-stop...i want the fan to run the whole time the receiver is on.

- I dont want to plug it into a receptacle cuz i will have to plug and un-plug it

Does anyone know if there is a device that I can plug the fan power supply into and use my remote (Logitech One) to turn it on? or anyway I can get em to turn on with the receiver?

I really need/want to get fans.....I tried out an old computer CPU fans and cooled it down quite a bit.

Anyone's input, suggestions, or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Again wishing everyone and their families a great Holiday.

Thank you
Jeff

Hi, Jeff.

Quick question - do you have a power console in your system? Some of those can turn on outlets based on another component being on.

Just checking if you might already have the solution right there. I know that we can get you set up either way, though.

Yeah, I meant a power conditioner. My Belkin PureAV power console has an AC trigger. But, it sounds like you don't have anything like that.

There are a number of remote control power outlets, such as this set of three for $30. I'm just trying to find one that would work with your remote, which is IR. I'm also wondering if you could use the "Control" output on the back panel of the 1019 to trigger the fans.

Just buy a fan with a 12 volt plug and plug it into the remote turn on of your receiver.

Here's one for a buck! Can't be much simpler that that.

Edit: Just looked at the manual for your receiver and it doesn't look like it has remote turn on. LAME! I thought that was a standard feature with all receivers. Every one I ever owned in the past had it. Anyway, yeah it looks like you're going to need something like a power center that has remote turn on like Adam suggested. My Belkin PF31 has it, (one of the reasons why I bought it actually).

There are such things as current sensing relays, I could build a little box that has a power cord, with an outlet that has one receptacle that passes straight through and you plug your receiver into and the other side would switch on and off when a load is drawn through the first outlet. Could be used universally and built for true 20A loads if needed. Of course the current sensor sensitive enough to switch on with a receiver that is idle is about $120. Then add in an auxillary relay of higher amperage rating for the switched outlet, receptacle, enclosure. Your looking at about $180

You could also tap into your receivers power supply to switch an external relay.

Or get a switched outlet strip.

Or an optical sensor that switches a relay. put it over your receivers power light somewhere or something.

ahh so many options so little time! :D

Adam,
Are the power conditioners turned on with a remote or are they always on?

Where is the remote turn on ? there are no triggers on my receiver
Yeah, sorry dude just noticed that. Sucks. I think your best bet is a power center with remote trigger built in.

Mine is always on. Hmmm, I think that I might have given you the wrong info on my Belkin. It does have an AC trigger, but it doesn't look like it will turn on certain outlets based on another component being on. For that AC trigger to work, you'd need a power outlet on the back of your receiver...and if you had that, then you wouldn't need any of this. :) Sorry about that!

Let me look around a bit while others are giving you answers. I know this stuff is out there, but my search kung fu has been weak this afternoon.

Jeff, I should have asked this, too - why do you think that the 1019 is warm enough that it needs fans? Do you have it in a confined space?

Here! I knew they had these things. :D

$25 and should do exactly what you want it to.

Do they make power conditioners with a triggered recep? I have been searching since last night....lol Yes it is a lot warmer then normal, pretty damn hot to the touch. I have read, somewhere else, that the 1019 runs hot

I just read through some reviews, and someone mentioned that their Pioneer amp drew too much power in standby to activate the sensor in that strip. I don't think that my Pioneer draws much or any power in standby, so I'm not sure what was causing that.

Anyway, that person recommended this power strip that does the same thing for about the same cost, but it is adjustable.

Probably. I think that I'll let you search for those, though. :)

That second product that I linked to does have some filtering and surge protection.

I have one of those that I use to power up my EP2000. Works like a charm. And yes, it is adjustable.

I also use the smart strip to turn on my Adcom amp for my dual subs. Works great!!
