Converting my music

I've got a laptop all set to go to hook up to my HT. I have most of my cd's ripped WMA and also have a decent amount ripped FLAC. I'll be using Windows Media Center and all the above seems fine.

My big issue is all my Itunes music. I realize that I have a just a ton of it, mostly one off stuf.. a song or two from lots of different albums. I've got at least 400 folders I think. I want to convert all of it to MP3. I've apparently done some of them manually since some of the folder have both, but what I hoping for is a program that will just go through all the ITunes folders and convert all the files and put them in another location outside the Itunes root folder.

Does anything like that exist?

Hi, Chris. iTunes should be able to do what you want.

First, get your songs organized in iTunes so that you can select all of the ones that you want to convert. You can create a Playlist, or just have them all in your library.

Next, go into "Edit - Preferences - General" and change the "Import Settings" to MP3 and the bit rate that you want.

Next, go into "Edit - Preferences - Advanced" and change the iTunes media folder location to something else. This will be the location where it will store your new MP3 files.

Then, select all of the files to convert, right click, and choose "Create MP3 Version." It will convert all of them, except for any protected AAC files that can't be converted.

Adam what FLAC reader would you recommend, if you are trying to down load music and utilize the higher sample rates?

Hi, Gordon. Sorry, but I don't use FLAC. I just have some past experience with iTunes.

I don't know if you're already aware of this, but transcoding lossy files results in additional loss. If you're fine with that, any of the options already listed would work for you.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I'm not fine with the loss at all, but a lot of the files I have in Itunes are CD's I either initially ripped in Itunes to begin with or just one-off purchases.

Since i want to use Windows Media Center as my front end, the Itunes files are pretty much out. Also, this isn't critcal listening type stuff here. When I really want to sit and listen, I'm old school and like holding the actual discs and putting them in the player.

I've also started getting my vinyl collection going. Once I do some research and get a decent reasonably priced record player, I'll be spending a lot of time spinning records. My wife loves antiquing and drags me to shop after shop. I pretty much just find an old dusty chair to sit in, but after following her around one time, I realized a lot of these places have LP's... lots of them... many not ever listened to. I've found all sorts of great stuff. I just got STYX's Lorelei single this weekend. Pretty cool!
