Converting iTunes and lossless downloads ?

I don't have a lot of iTunes songs, maybe a 1000 total of just odds and ends, but I'd like to convert them to something quality and DRM free. What are some good programs that do it easily? I don't mind buying one either if there are good options. I'm trying to avoid the convoluted process I've read about if I can.

Also, is there a solid quality site where you can download lossless music files? Again, if they free of the all the copyright stuff, it'd be ideal.

avaxhome.ws isn't bad, but not great. All of their download links seem to point to rapidshare which charges you, so in reality it's not that great for the limited selection of avaxhome.ws, and on top of that you can only get 80 GB a month with them, which is weak. I do that in about a week.

I'd suggest a Newsgroup, you'll need a provider, basically a monthly charge ($10-$30) and the selection is righteous. I get software and high-def movies off of it so it pays in folds.

dBpoweramp is about all that is bulletproof on the pc. I was using xls on my mac while wirelessly streaming the files from one of my pc's... it was ridiculous. Another for the mac is called Max, which is highly rated. There are even more if you're running Linux. But you have to be a geek, like me, to run it... all command line.

dBpoweramp Music Converter is free, well, mine is so far. :)
I believe the dBpoweramp CD Ripper program is a trial for 21 days. But I don't need it because iTunes will rip to ALAC which is my goal regardless.
dBpoweramp will rip FLAC to ALAC, (ogg, wav, ape, etc.). Google 'codec central' and you'll see a list.

Good luck.
