Don't know much about Plasma TVs, but I want one for my stereo room for occasional movies and to act as a monitor. I'm looking at 2 TVs:

Panasonic TH50PX500U

Samsung HPR5052X

They are both 50" Plasma screens with similar specs, however the Samsung has a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and the Panny has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1.

Anyone have any thoughts on these 2 TVs. Also, is the difference in contrast ratio a significant factor?

Well, despite the higher cpontrast ratio on the Samsung, I went with the Panasonic. It cost a few hundred more, but seems to have solid reviews. I can't find a review on the Samsung.

Contrast Ratio can be an important factor but you can't always believe the stated contrast ratio any more than you can believe the stated refresh time for lcd monitors. The black level could be far below spec while the white level is far above spec - leading to a huge contrast ratio but not necessarily an accurate display.

For what it's worth, in every review I've read where these things are actually measured, the Panasonics always do very well.

Got a chance to see the Samsung and Panasonic side by side today. IMO, there was no comparison. The Panasonic had a significantly crisper and more detailed picture. The Samsung was nice, but not when viewed next to the Panasonic.

I just purchased the Panasonic TH50PX50 a few weeks ago. It is the same as the 500U without the PIP & photo card reader & a few other things. IMHO the Panasonic is the best bet. There black level was better than any other plasma that I had compaired it too. Your best bet is to take a trip down to your local A/V store and let your eye be the judge.
