Hello everyone-

I have been poking around for a while getting information for upgrading my A/V system. I purchased a Yamaha RX -V2700 a few months ago and have been slowly wiring everything together. I have the system working pretty well using the DVD and VHS, but am at a point where I am getting different opinions about connecting a playstation and HD cable box into the system. Should I connect the Cable Box to the TV (46" Sony 1080p) with a HDMI and then send audio to the Yamaha? or send the everything to the Yamaha and can the receiver can remain off, during regular TV watching, and the signal carry through the receiver and on to the TV and still receive the signal? The same question goes for the PS 2, send video to the TV and Audio to the receiver? or all to the receiver?

The reason I ask, I need to buy the new cables and to do it now would be easy because some of the walls are opened up due to renovations going on.

The people where I bought the Yamaha have no clue. I got a different answer from each person I asked.

Thanks for any advice.

Well, I would at least try two cables in the wall since it is open, from the cable box to TV, HDMI and component and perhaps even an HDMI to the receiver location, and an analog and digital audio to the tv as well with digital to the receiver. If your receiver is in a separate location from the TV, run HDMI and component from it to the TV, cheap insurance.

You or other family members may want to watch the TV casually without turning on the rest of the system?

At times, there is an issue with the HDMI 'hadshaking' properly through the receiver; as well, the cable box and cable company may not be set up yet for HDMI even though that connection is on their box?

Wire is cheap and the wall is open. Cover all bases. Also, use monoprice.com for your cable needs.

So do I have this correct? I would run a HDMI from cable box to TV, Component from cable box to Receiver. (company uses either HDMI or Component). I have the DVD player connected HDMI to receiver and VCR connected with composite but played through Component, therefore I and running both HDMI and Component to TV from the receiver, so the Cable TV would also use the component line that runs from the receiver to the TV?

I hope that is right:eek:

HDMI can carry both audio and video whereas Component is only video. You don't need component from the cable box to the TV if you are running HDMI from the cable box to the TV. However, if you want to use the receiver for watching cable you need to get audio to the receiver and that will require a separate audio connection from the cable box to the receiver as well as settings changes in the cable box to tell it to send audio out the digital audio outputs. All cable boxes are not the same so you may have to make that menu change everytime you want to go from watching thru the TV only and using the receiver for audio.
