Connections to my RX-V1800

I was forced to use the analog side of my Yamaha RX-V1800 because I was using an older CRT TV. Now that I have a widescreen capable of accepting HDMI, its making me rethink my connections.

a.) I still want the menues of my RX-V1800 and that of my DVD player to be displayed on my widesceen. Will the HDMI out of the receiver pass these menu items through to the screen (if the DVD player output is connected via HDMI to the rceiver) or am I forced to retain a set of component video signals?

b.) Which device should I let to the upconversion? The DVD player, the receiver, or my Vizio LCD tv? Which would give me better results?

c.) My DVD player also doubles as my CD player. Which has the better set of DACs, the RX-V1800 or my Samsung DVD-1080P9 upconverting player? I use Pure Direct mode when listening to CDs so I was thinking of using the analog audio out of my DVD player and plugging them into the CD analog in of the receiver if the DACS of the player are of comparable quality or better quality than that of the receiver.

Try it, and see if it works.

Hi 3db, how you do? :)

a.) Check if the HDMI connection will pass the menus through your receiver.

b.) Check which one you prefer, using your own eyes.

c.) Try both ways (analog & digital), and listen to what sounds best to your own ears.

* I know these are simple answers, but they are truly the best way to find out for yourself.

Best wishes,
Bob

HDMI ain’t all that, IMO. If you’re mixing gear with different protocols – 1.0, 1.2 etc. – you may have some “handshake” problems (which is merely a polite way of saying “incompatibility”). Currently only Blu-ray DVDs are capable of delivering 1080p. And even then, if your screen size / viewing distance relation isn’t optimal, it won’t look any better than 720p.

To answer your questions:

a. You’ll get the DVD menus. As far as the receiver menus on-screen, the manual should tell you about that.

c. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe all the bass management is accomplished in the digital domain, therefore incoming analog signals will be converted. Makes sense to me to use the player’s digital output and avoid an addition conversion step.
