Receiver to Amp connection.

This is an ANALOG connection from the pre-amp outputs of the receiver to the inputs of the amplifier. That being said, analog RCA cables and digital coax are both made of the same or similar coaxial cable. RCA pairs are usually a lot cheaper so your best bet is 3-4 rca pairs for a multichannel amp.

I thought if the avr was processing the audio in dolby digital the rca connections to the amp would be digital coax to get the most out of the signal, but i never hooked up an avr and an amp before so thats why im asking

i used standard analog RCA cables for my amps, but you make a good point about the digital and i don't know the answer. mine sounds fine. i would recommend you contact your amp's and/or receiver's manufacturer and ask them. that will be the definitive answer.

A digital stream cannot be sent directly to an amplifier. It MUST be decoded first, which would require a preamp/processing step first. As jcpanny said, the preamp outputs of the receiver are ALWAYS analog - RCA (unbalanced) being the most common, or XLR (balanced) usually on higher end gear. So standard RCA is most likely what you want.

In a case where you use RCA type interconnects I'd recommend identical cables. For example I use 5 identical 18" Quality RCA Interconnects from my receiver Pre-Outs to my Amplifier Inputs.

IMHO
