Connection Advice Please

Hi guys, I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to all the different connectors etc.

I have a new HD tv but I plugged my old dvd/surround system into it via scart and it doesn't work. There is a picture but it's terrible so after a couple of days hunting around the internet I've discovered that it might be something to do with 2 different types of scart signal - rgb/composite ? Or something like that.

Anyway...

I came up with 2 plans.

Plan A. Buy some component cables(red/blue/green ? ) and use them with the old player, still not sure that will work though.
Plan B. Buy an upscalling dvd player to plug into my tv via HDMI but then I don't know how to get the sound to my surround sound system.

Can I use the HDMI from the upscale DVD player to send just video and send the audio via the 2 red/white cables ? Or is that system dependant and full of problems ?

The upscale player I'm looking at is the Philips DVP3980 if that helps ?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Welcome to the forum!

To better help you, it would be great to know the following:
1. Which TV (make and model) did you get?
2. What surround sound system (make and model) do you have?

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome Adam.

I became terribly impatient and went out and spent money so ended up answering my own question.

For anyone else who this might help in the future though:

TV is an LG 42lg7000.

The surround sound is an all-in-one surround and DVD player, an older Panasonic SA-HT520.

I ended up buying a Philips DVP3980 DVD player that upscales to 1080p.

I'm also in the UK so I have Sky+ (satellite). - This will be replaced with Sky HD asap.

My connections are Sky+ to TV via scart, Philips DVD to TV via HDMI but with analogue sound outputs connected to the old Panasonic.

The Panasonic is now purely used for surround sound purposes and won't be used for future DVD watching.

I also have a Wii connected but that's purely for fun. A PS3 is connected on occasion when watching a blu-ray film until a suitable (and reasonably priced) blu-ray surround system is bought.

I'm happy for now with this setup, not as neat as it could be but ok for now.

Forget SCART. It is French abomination, and I don't think it passes an HD signal. When I have worked on my father's HT system in England, I have only got bad pictures from SCART. The plug is big heavy and awkward, and falls out all the time. It takes an organization as misbegotten as the EEC to come up with something as truly useless and bad as SCART.

Use HDMI, failing that component.
