connecting two receivers

I added a second receiver to be able to power additional speakers. I am having difficultly getting the second receiver simply pass through whatever is coming from the first receiver to the speakers. I have tried a variety of digital and analog approaches. Is there a trick to connecting receivers?

Does one or the other of these receivers have pre-outs for all channels? what receivers do you have?

Harmon Kardon AVR 310 and a Sherwood RD-7500. I'm trying to get the Sherwood to power speakers playing whatever I have on the HK. The HK has 5 channel preamp outputs, a red and black multiport output, optical and coax outputs, and outputs for each of the 4 video input channels.

I am assuming you just want to amplify a pair of speakers from the L/R channels.

Some basics:

* You need to run the pre out L/R channels into an input on the second RX (and set the input on the second RX to that input)
* You need to send all 5 channels back to the HK using connections from the pre outs back to the matching input. The center, surrounds and sub connect from pre out to the matching inputs on the HK, and L/R go from the HK to the second RX into an input, and then from the tape outs back to the HK.
* Make sure the second RX's input is set to the input you sent the L/R's to.
* You most likely need to set your HK to monitor the pre out loop. On my Yamaha I would need to select the external decoder from my tape monitor/external decoder button if I was doing this.

Two channels only, right?

Take the "tape out" signal and feed it into a line level input on the second amp. This way, whatever source is selected, it wills end the R/L signals to the second receiver, where you can control the their volume.

If you're talking 5.1 channels, well that's a different animal. You'll need to take the line level outputs of ALL channels on the source receiver and feed them into the "main amp" inputs on the second receiver. All volume will be controlled by the source receiver . As for the sub, well, you'll just have to use a "Y" adapter and send it to a separate powered sub.

Thanks. What qualifies as a line level input on the second receiver.

thanks. I couldn't get it to work using the tape output to a line input. Going from the preamp output to a line input works other than the volume for the speakers connected to second receiver is controlled by the first receiver.
