Connecting to an old receiver

I am trying to connect a Yamaha YST-SW500 subwoofer to an Onkyo TX-SV414PRO.
I tried putting the sub on the B speaker connects on the Onk. The problem is that the PROLOGIC circuit apparently does not use the B speaker out.
If I switch to BYPASS and turn on speakers A+B I get the sub.
That won't do it for film surround.
Any one know a way around this?
Can I run the sub off the front or the rear speaker outs; in parallel? Or the center speaker out?

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't found any connection or menu info on the Onkyo TX-SV414PRO, so some of this may be off.

I recommend that you connect the subwoofer to the Onkyo and to your front speakers as shown on page 5 of the subwoofer owners manual (if you don't have it, you can download the PDF version direct from Yamaha at this link) under the section, "Connecting to speaker terminals of the amplifier" and "If using one YST-SW500".

If the Onkyo allows you to set up bass management, then set it up as if you have large front speakers and have no subwoofer. That would then send the bass to the front speakers (which, in reality, is sending it to the sub because you have it hooked up in series with the front speakers).

If you have any questions about that, just let us know. I'd be interested in how it all works out, if you don't mind posting again and letting us know. Thanks.

connect sub to "mono out"

Connect to the "mono out" . see page 10 of your manual.

Get a RCA to speaker wire convertor. example:
http://www.antonline.com/p_AH1850X-NX_277970.htm

Connect to either the right or left input on the sub

===================

You sub is a powered sub and you should not conenct line level signals. In order for Dolby surround to work on your receiver, you connect your rear speakers to the "B" speaker terminals and leave the speaker "B" button off.

When you connect to "B" level and turn "B" speakers on you defeat dolby becuase you are teeling your reciever that you have two sets of front stero speakers.

P.S. - here is where I found your manual online: http://www.retrevo.com/support/Onkyo-TX-SV414-Receivers-manual/id/365bh231/t/2/
