Connecting old PC subwoofer to receiver

Greetings! I was given an old Advent AV522 powered subwoofer. It plugs into a wall outlet and has a power switch and volume knob. It was designed to be connected to a PC with external speakers. I would like to hook it up to my Sony home theatre receiver. My receiver has a subwoofer output (single RCA jack). The subwoofer has L/R RCA inputs, a mini-stereo jack input, and a mini-stereo jack output. I tried connecting an RCA audio cable to the subwoofer inputs (L/R) and either the L or the R to the subwoofer output on the receiver - but neither seemed to work. I also tried an RCA audio (L/R) cable from the receiver (tried both the L and the R) to the mini-stereo input jack on the receiver - but this did not work either. Do I need a different kind of cable? Is there another way to connect it besides the subwoofer out port on the receiver? Is this type of subwoofer not compatible - or just broken? The power light does come on and gives a hum. Thanks!!!

if your receiver have an L/R Preamp output, you can connect it from the preamp to the sub L/R input, it should work. If you dont have a preamp output you can use the receiver normal L/R output(usually label rec out) but when you turn the volume up/down on the receiver it wont change the sub volume, you have to turn the sub volume too.

Scott,

It sounds like connecting the RCA cable from the Sony receiver's subwoofer output to the RCA input(s) on the subwoofer should work. You could use a Y-adapter to connect the single output on the receiver to both inputs on the sub. Make sure that your Sony receiver is set up so that it sends a signal to the subwoofer, as the default set-up might have all of your speakers set to "large" (which would only send LFE bass to the sub during movie playback). Your receiver probably has some sort of speaker set-up in a settings menu.
