Connecting my subwoofer to tower

I'm new to this forum and know pretty much nothing about home electronics. I have my friends subwoofer that he gave me. All that is coming out of it are two wires, one coated red, one coated black. My stereo tower has a single plug to receive the wire from my subwoofer. Is there any way for me to hook these two up together? I went to Radio Shack and they sold me a cable that has a "plug" on one end, and two bare wires on the other end, but it didn't work. Please help and tell me if I need to be more specific.

Sounds like a passive subwoofer and you need an amplifier.

The amp is needed to boost the power of that signal to a level that will drive the speaker.

Check out parts express and search on "plate amplifier" or "subwoofer amplifier".

Do you have any recommendations for a good amp for my subwoofer? Or would it be worth it to buy a new active subwoofer?
