Connecting equipment to Panasonic Home Theater SC-PT480

Hi guys,

I'm new to the world of Home Theaters, so I'd love to pick your brain:

I bought a Panasonic SC-PT480 home theater, which comes with a standard (yet) good non-BD DVD. I know it's not a top-end system at all but, for my needs and small living room, it seemed like a good match. And the Black Friday price at CostCo was a big encouragement. :)

Now, here's my question:

On the back of the system, there are four connections:
- Digital Audio In Optical;
- HDMI (Arc) AV OUT;
- Video Out;
- L and R Aux Input.

So, if I understand correctly, it has 2-3 audio inputs: Digital Audio In Optical; L and R Aux Input; and, for ARC-compatible TVs, the HDMI-Arc. My TV is a Vizio VX32L which, as far as I can tell, is not ARC-compatible (can't seem to find a mention on the manual, or online, so I'l go with no).

Which brings us down to 2 inputs.

The question, then, is: what's the best/most proper way to connect all equipment I have to it.

The equipment includes:
- Vizio VX32L TV
- Sony blu-ray BDPBX1
- A Moxi HD DVR cable box

I keep doubting myself on the best way to connect them, to get the most out of every equipment.

On one hand, I want to connect the blu-ray with the optical entry, since it's supposedly the one with the best sound quality. Does that make sense?

Which leaves me with one input, the regular Aux input. For now, I decided to connect the Cable Box's Component L&R audio outputs to the Aux In at the Home Theater. Which means my TV, right now, is not connected in any way to the HT, and there's no sound going into the TV either. But I'm not sure if that's the ideal setting.

Should I be sending the Cable Box to the TV, and then from the TV to the HT instead?

The TV also has an Optical Out option. Should I be sending everything to the TV - cable box & BD - and then sending the signal from the TV to the HT system through the Optical?

Help! :)

TIA, Danny.

Run HDMI from everything to the TV then digital out of the TV into the HTiB setup via optical.

You should get the best audio possible this way and can still use the speakers inside of your TV if you want to.

I've setup speaker bars this way, and they have worked well. Better than the TV speakers, but not by a whole lot and VERY limited in expandability.

Not sure what type of deal you got, but a lot of used gear out there can be pretty phenomenal for the money.
