I have a Deawoo region free dvd/mp3/vcd player that supports dolby/dts/virtual surround.
this was bought in US 2 yrs back (model DVD-5200 )
this model is not in the market and there is no manual for the same.
I would like to find out if it is possible to get 5.1 output by just connecting the 5.1 speaker set to this dvd player.
or do we need a recv'er+speaker set to get 5.1 surround output .

Iam evaluating if i should by Home theatre in a box solution or if i could build the pieces as i already have a dvd player ( buy only the 5.1 o/p speaker set/ recv'er )

In general, if the player supports dolby/dts output, do we need a recv'er all the time to get 5.1 o/p.
some dvd players also come with inbuild decoders isnt it.
If the dvd player has 2 audio pins (R/L)+ one video pin + one caxial pin + 3 component videopins + ove s-video pin, can we assume that this supports the decoder is inbuilt. If we connect the 5.1 speaker set directly will it work.
inputs in this regard would be useful.

Iam new to this home theatre stuff and proper directions in this regard would be useful.

No. In simplified terms...

You'll need to pump it through a receiver (lowest cost solution) using one of the digital connections (either coaxial or toslink) to derive the 5.1 channels from that digital feed and then amplify the signals and from there to the speakers.

It doesn't appear thet the decoder is built into your unit. If it was, you would have 6 analog outputs and they would probably be clearly marked as such. From your description it seems to lack those. Even if it did have them, you would still need a five channel amplifier or a receiver. Back to square one...

Well is it Dolby/DTS ready, do have the logos for Dolby and DTS on its front panel, look for them, you wont find them. Many manufacturers fool ppl by saying its Dolby Supported, which primarily means that you can connect it to a separate Dolby/DTS decoder.

This is exactly the case with your DVD since it should have atleast 6 separate outputs for speaker cables to connect to a 5.1 speaker set, for a HTIB. Which by your description I dont see, what you are telling is a ways to connect to your TV (component, co-axial, Digital etc).

So my friend, if you want a HTS, then you should go and buy a HTIB, what you have is a DVD player only.
