Connecting Computer To Surround Sound

Wow, I am relieved to finally be able to actually post. I swear I registered to at least 5 different home theatre forums only to get "Must be activated by administrator" and "Must allow three days before initial posting" messages. It got kind of aggrivating, lol.

Anyway, I am a 14 year old kid setting up a small home theatre in my bedroom. I have a 6-speaker Sony STR-K740P surround system hooked up to TV, CD, DVD and PS2. Right now I have it wired to run audio off the CD, DVD and PS2 deck. I was wondering if there was a way I could hook up my computer (which sits about 10' away from my system) to run music from Limewire or iTuned in mp3 format to my surround sound? Is there some sort of cable or wireless connector that I can use? If there is, what should I look for in a connector cable?

Thank-you in advance.

If all you want is stereo for music then all you need is an adapter like this with a long RCA extension to go from the mini jack line level output of the PC to the like level input of the receiver.

If you want a digital connection then you will need to either get an SPDIF adapter for your motherboard or get a sound card that supports SPDIF digital output.

cheers:)

^Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

If I do go with that setup, that means I will have to have my surround sound running every time I want to listen to music on my computer, right? So I can't just use my standard welfare computer speakers? Thanks.

If you buy and use the adapter, it plugs into the output where your computer speakers are plugged in right now. So, if you wanted to sit at your computer and hear sound from your computer speakers again, you would have to unplug the adapter and plug your computer speakers back in. It's a little annoying if the back of your computer isn't easily accessible  .

BTW, there are wireless options, (expensive$$), but this is affordable and dependable. You might be able to find the adapter at your local radio shack.

How expensive are we talking here for wireless? Is the sound quality better or worse than an RCA cable?

I do the same thing with my computer. honestly the quality of mp3 is not worth buying a wireless set up either way depending on your system is will just sounds decent. You can get the mini to rca at any major electronics dealer i know i got mine and an extension for about $15
