Connecting an ACI Force XL to a Yamaha RX-V2600

Hi all,

I've recently purchased an ACI Force XL subwoofer, and while I am waiting for it I need to determine what cables to buy in order to connect it. I posted the question on the ACI forum but haven't gotten a full answer yet so I'm posting it here.

I want to connect the subwoofer both from the two channel output to augment my 2 channel music listening, as well as to the LFE connection from my receiver for movies. ACI gives me the following inputs: L(eft), R(ight), and Theater. However, I've read that the Theater input has a high pass filter set at 30Hz, in order to limit low frequency responses in order to maximize SPL. I'm not sure that I want this limitation.

So my questions are this:

1. Can I combine the L and R preamp outs on my receiver using a Y-cable and plug that into the L of the sub to use my subwoofer with my 2 channel music listening? A side question is will this be worse sound quality than having a dedicated cable for the L and R from my receiver to the sub?

2. If I can do #1, can I then connect the LFE of my receiver into the R of the sub, and are there disadvantages to not using the Theater input besides loss of SPL?

3. Do I need to split the preamp output of the L and R back into the main L and R in of the Yamaha or can will it output to both the preamp out and speaker level at the same time?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sub connections

I recommend a single coax cable from the receiver LFE output to the L or R jackt on the sub. Use the receiver to set the crossover frequency and set the sub's crossover to the max frequency or OFF.

Using the Main pre-amp outputs will mess up the the bass management on your receiver and require that you set the mains to LARGE and sub to OFF of the receiver

Thanks Panny, but my mains are set to LARGE and the sub to OFF. I use the "Pure Direct" on the 2600 which I believe only outputs 2 channel music to the main 2 channels, so my sub would go unused if I plugged it into the LFE and wanted to listen to music using "Pure Direct". Do you know if this is incorrect?

You are correct. I feel this is one of the negatives for the Yamahas. Unfortunately, the Theater input does not bypass the sub's crossover. That may have helped. If you could find an Outlaw ICBM (discontinued), that would solve this issue. You may want to rethink your receiver or sub decision.

Keep your Yamaha.
Run separate RCA cables from the R and L preouts to the R and L inputs on the Force. This will give you the best sound quality and is the recommended connection for music in 2ch.

Don't try to interconnect the cables to save money; you have to have a mixer to combine the signals (there's one built into the sub).
