You dont necessarily have to have a receiver.. but you do have to have an amplifier. This little guy isnt bad. I have one, and for the price/features I'd recommend it if you dont want to spend a ton of money. The speakers hook up in the back and you'll need an adapter to go from 1/8 mini plug out from ipod to stereo patch cable (rca red/white) to back of amplifier. You could also get just a stereo receiver and use the same adapter. Budget?

They may make a wireless adapter you can plug into a receiver and use a base for the iPod but I don't know that for sure. I have an iPhone and I bought a cable that turns the 3.5mm jack into a left and right phono and have it hooked up to my preamp that way. I suppose you could buy one of those and then use two phono extension wires, but I have no idea what kind of distance you'd be doing but I don't imagine the loss would be that bad if even noticable (Unless you're running like 50 ft or something).

You could always buy a phono plug adapter like I did and just make a playlist on your iPod and leave it where the receiver is. Just some ideas, hopefully of some use to you.
