confusion between analog vs digital processing

I'm confused about whether modern receivers need to convert analog inputs into digital before doing any processing and amplification. I have the understanding that digital inputs are preferred, to avoid doing ADC, since modern receivers, like most "boxes", work in the digital domain. Am I wrong? Or, do receivers stay in the analog domain if fed analog inputs?

In case it matters, I have a Sony STR-DH830.

You basically have it down. Old enough receivers don't have digital processing at all :) Some modern digitally equipped receivers have analog inputs that may bypass internal processing but most processing is digital now rather than analog, so if you want it....

Some prefer their players/source to do DAC processing and keep it analog after that...some wish to use the DAC/digital processing in their receivers ....and the ADC or DAC conversions are cleaner than many think...

You can test your ability to detect differences of multiple dac/adc processing using software like Audacity...
