Ok I have a new Denon AVR x4000-

I currently have 1 set of ceiling speaker operating in zone 2 and a 5.1 system in the main.

For the life of me I cannot get zone 3 to work with the preouts.

I am trying to connect an old denon avr 3200 as the external amp and perhaps I am just not making the connections correctly?

Zone 3 pre out on the AVR x 4000 - to what on the 3200? I currently have 2 in celing speakers connected to front l/r and will add another set on the patio (run in 5 ch. stereo).

I feel like I am looking for that ketchup bottle that is staring at me...

I tried it.....

Would there be an issue with sending the digital signal attached via RCA out from cable box to the X4000? I also tried it CD inputs on avr 3200 with x4000 zone 3 preout....no dice.

I know there is no issue with speakers, I problem solved it with direct rca Y connector.

For the love of god. somebody give me a <500 option at this point and I will buy it just to stop the W!.......but I know it should work.

Is your X4000 zone 3 turned on? It almost behaves like the on-off for main power.

Multi zone outputs typically will NOT pass digital signals you need to run analog outs in addition to digital outs when using multi zone.
