Hi,

I really hope you pros can help me because I am desperate. I have a set of custom speaks which I love so much. They are a set of 2 towers that each have a tweeter, 2 same sized medium sized cones in the middle and a bass at the bottom.

One of the medium cones is now making a strange vibrating/rattle/distortion sound when in the lower frequencies and I think it is broken (if it help if I selotape the bottom part of the cone down lightly it dampens the distortion away). The cone is securely in place and so I think it is broken.

When I take the cone out there is no ratings or anything on them so I cant replace them or know what rating they are so I get the right ones to match the rest of the system. I am a complete noobie when it comes to these things, can anyone help!?!

When you say "cones" I'm assuming you mean the entire driver.

Have you gone to the manufacturer for a replacement driver? But then you did say "custom", still someone had to make them.
If you move the cone in and out (gently) with your hand do you hear a scraping noise?

its just one cone that is broken. err maybe a driver I dont really know all the terminology am kinda new to this kinda thing sorry. The cone/driver is 7inchs or 160mm in diameter and there is two identical ones in each speaker, one of them is doing the distortion thing.

Nope cant hear any scraping sound

They where made my the shop who buys in its own components and assembles them, unfortunately I no longer live anywhere near them and cant reach them. I have taken the cones out to see if there is any branding on them and there are labels. They are really good speakers, very loud and very clean sound and cost a fair bit of cash.

If you gently move the drive (7" cone) inward with your hand (when off) do you feel or hear a slight scraping? if yes then the driver is probable blown. if no, the it may be blown, you just cant feel/hear the unraveled voice coil inside the magnet (big hunk of metal on the back side of the driver.)

Look at the lable. call parts express, 1-800-338-0531, and tell them the model number of the driver. If they dont carry the exact driver, tell the whatever information is on the driver. They should be able to match one closely if not exactly.

You might have to do some research and find the make/model of the driver to get a good match. If parts express doesnt have them, search the internet and call around. Swapping the drivers out is easy. if youve taken the blown driver out then unplug the two connecting wires and plug them into the new driver and screw back into the cabnet.

If you're unable to identify the brand and model it's going to get very difficult to repair them to original condition. Every driver has it's own particular set of electrical and mechanical properties. When a crossover is designed it is for that particular set of properties. A replacment driver may fit in the hole and be "X ohms, X watts" but will have a complete different impedance curve, motor strength and a host of other properties. Hopefully you'll be able to get an exact match and get back to music listening.
