Composite video & S-video

A question for all you experts, my TV Monitor is connected to my Yamaha RX-V659 Receiver via S-video only (video up conversation is set to ON); however, my 4DTV Satellite Receiver is connected to the A/V receiver via Composite video only this is due to the fact that the S-video connection works on digital channels & the Composite video connection works on both digital & analog channels. My 4DTV Satellite Receiver also has S-video output so I will like to know whether it’s advisable to connect both the Composite video & S-video form the Satellite Receiver to RX-V659 Receiver or will doing so cause a problem. In a nut shell is it safe to have both video (Composite video & S-video) outputs from the Satellite Receiver connected to the video input of the A/V Receiver.

No it is not a good idea to use both composite and s-video cables on the same input. It probably won't work anyway unless the receiver has a priority scheme and picks one over the other.

Why does it matter? If the composite video works fine for both analog and digital stations and the receiver can transcode the composite to s-video to feed the TV, you are set. You will not notice any difference between feeding the receiver s-video vs feeding it composite and having it transcode to s-video. The 'digital' stations may be broadcasting digital video but all of the video inputs on the receiver are analog and the digital video is converted to analog by the sat before it gets to the receiver.
