Component Video interconnects

I just don't get the big(or best) picture! Would appreciate all replies:

I understand that component video interconnects should be superior to the S-video which I am using now DVD player to TV. However, confused as to where to use component video interconnects for best results:
1. From A/V receiver to DVD player?
2. From DVD player to TV?
3.From A/V receiver to TV?

4.. How much should I spend? Would Philips be very acceptable or?

We only use A/V for DVD or VCR playback not for TV programs

Yamaha RX-V440 A/V receiver
Toshiba SD 1700 DVD player ( 4 years old- RCA jacks -no fibre optic)
Sony WEGA 27 inch TV

Thanks to all!

Firstly, that Philips cable sounds fine.
You have two options how to hook it up. If you want the convenience of switching video with the source, VCR and DVD, go through the A/V. If it doesn't matter, go direct to TV and save a second set of cable cost.

If the A/V is used, you still need a cable to take care of the VCR video from the A/V as most likely the VCR will not have component video, just s-video.

Oh, that fiber optic is only for digital audio.

Simple: All of the above. :)

If the receiver does not transcode from composite or s-video to component then you will have to run an extra cable from the monitor out on the receiver to the TV but everything else should be connected to the receiver via component cables.
