Hi , Can someone explain to me or tell me if it is possible to connect a prog. scan DVD with component cable to an HDMI HT receiver ,than run HDMI out to the TV? Will it up convert the signal ? Is it this even possible or a waste of time? A sale rep. told me it is not possible unless i use an HDMI switching receiver. I am a little confused , anyone............?

That depends on the receiver. Some do and some don't.

See above answer.

It won't improve the picture, but it may cut down on the number of cables going to your monitor.

Receiver features

High end Yamaha Denon and Pioneer receivers have the "video format conversion" feature to take a composite video input and output over HDMI. Some, including the Yamaha RX-V2700 also over upscaling to 720p or 1080i. Most of these receivers are in the $1k+ price range.

It this is out of your budget, you should be able to get comparable video performance with non-HDMI receiver by connecting HDMI sources directly to the TV and purchasing an inexpensive switch box from monoprice for multiple HDMI sources. Get a quality upscaling DVD player like the Oppo DV-970HD ($150) to improve the PQ of your DVDs.

You know, you don't HAVE to route video through the receiver, don't you?

You can run the video directly to the TV and use that for video switching and use the receiver for audio only.

Most all dvd players have various audio connections? The best in my opinion is coax cable, others use a fibre optic cable, both allow for digital audio to pass from the dvd player to the receiver. If these are not available then just use regular rca(red & white) audio cables.:) Lastly when you set up your receiver, tell it which audio format your going to use.
