Component question for large room.

Greetings and Merry Christmas Audioholics. Thanks for this great website. I am a newbie to home theatre and I am ready to buy a home theatre system and have read the recommended systems based on price. I think I have selected the amp and dvd player but my main issue is room size.

Denon AVR 3805
Denon DVD 2910
Mordent Avant Speakers

We have a great room with 12 foot ceilings and approximately 25'x15'. The room is not enclosed on all sides, backs up to the kitchen. I plan on mounting the rear speakers about 10 feet up. The fronts will be about 5 feet up. My concerns are:

1. Will this speaker arrangement work?
2. Will this receiver have enough power for the room? 110W?

I also plan on buying a 50+ inch TV. Either DLP or plasma.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome aboard and we are here to help:D

Unfortunately your proposal will not be the best for speaker locations. 5ft height for fronts are not optimal at all. The tweeter height should be at the level of your ears when in the seated, listening position. But, if you have no options, you gotta do what you must.

The surrounds should be about 2 feet above your head position. Ten feet may be pushing it? Hopw far away is your listeing position from the front? How far back are you proposing the rear speakers? Is it possible to do them on th esides, perpendicular to your listeing position?

How sensitive are the speakers? Impedance? These have a bearing on the amps/receiver. What sound level/volume you listen to? Movie theater reference levels or comfortable levels?
I am sure you will get lots of help:D

Thanks for the response.

I can put the front speakers really at any height. Probably the lowest would be 3 feet. However the back is a problem because the room (great room design) does not have a full back wall. I would be sitting in the middle of the room. Facing me is the entertainment unit. Behind me is the kitchen. There is a 2 foot drop in the ceiling which was why I suggested putting the rear speakers at 10 feet. However I do have places to put the speakers on the side walls (perpendicular).

As for what type of speakers, I really do not know what the specs you mention really mean. I have only the audioholic recommended system which were the mordaunt short avant series speakers.

Listening 'style' would be watching movies at moderate volumes (I am a movie buff) and listening to music from moderate to pumping loud volumes. Mostly I am interested in quality movie watching experience.

I have mine set in the center of the room with the kitchen behind them. I used towers all around. While not the perfect layout, it is quiet impresive.

As far as the display is concerned, unless you are really into mounting the TV on the wall I would say go with a DLP, LCD, or LCoS over the plasma. You will be able to to save a few thousand dollars at that size. Room brightness and viewing angle also come into play, but unless someone is going to be significantly off to the side of the display, you will be good with the DLPs.

Also, both Samsung and Mits came out with 1080p DLPs this year, so the older models (720p) are cheaper if you can find them.

Check out the Yamaha RX-V2600 as an alternative to the Denon. I think they are pretty similar in price, and the signal processing on the Yamaha as gotten great reviews here on Audioholics.

If you have a Tweeter retailer in the area, the 50" 1080p DLPs are at $3500 (the Pioneer elite Plasmas are $6500 for the same size/resolution). I would also recommend you seriously look into ISF callibration and include that in your budget. It is really amazing how much better the sets look callibrated.

Good luck!

Yeah, I am now thinking tower speakers may be the way to go now.

Placement would be much better.

I was also looking at the 1080p sets. Right now my top choice is the Samsung 1080p, either 50" or 56". Brandsmart here in Florida has them for about ~$3300 and maybe with xmas and the super bowl it will be on sale. I will also look into getting this calibration and comparing the Yahama receiver.

Thanks Chicagomd.

Now I need to find tower speakers that have a good wife acceptance factor.
